SOTERIA: HEALING BODY, MIND AND SOUL

We are pleased to offer, through a Mayor's Healthy Hometown Movement grant, a Falls Prevention workshop that will be repeated six times in early 2009. The program is FREE, and includes take-home materials and a free lunch. Dates are Saturday, January 24; Thursday, February 19; Saturday, March 7; Tuesday, April 21; Saturday, May 23 and Thursday, June 04 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. You need only register for ONE workshop--each workshop offers identical content (though the professionals leading the sessions will vary). Registration is REQUIRED: call 502.896.0396 or email CHUMchurch@juno.com. Transportation is available through our church bus ministry for up to 14 people to and from each workshop; please let us know if you'd like us to provide transportation (first come, first served).

We also welcome service professionals who would like to lead a segment of the workshops. Here is a rough schedule for the program (the order of the topics presented may change from workshop to workshop, depending on which professional is leading the topic on that day).

9-9:30              Registration, juice and fruit

9:30-10            First discussion group: How vision and hearing checks are important to falls prevention

10-10:15          STRETCH:      Exercises using the resistance band to improve flexibility, balance and strength

10:15-10:45     Second discussion group: Monitoring your medicines and blood pressure to prevent falls

10:45-11          STRETCH:      Exercises using the resistance band to improve flexibility, balance and strength

11-11:15          Bathroom break, invitation to fix plate of food (free lunch!)

11:15-11:45     Third discussion group: Tips for Home Safety

11:45-12          STRETCH:      Exercises using resistance band to improve flexibility, balance and strength

12-12:15          Bathroom break, clearing of food

12:15-12:45     Fourth discussion group: Using canes, walkers and other assistive devices safely

12:45-1            STRETCH:      Exercises using resistance band to improve flexibility, balance and strength

1-1:30              Fifth discussion group: How to fall safely (and how to get back up!)

1:30-2              STRETCH:      Exercise using resistance band to improve flexibility, balance and strength

2-2:30              Sixth discussion group: “Feets Don’t Fail Me Now”—foot care and shoe choices in preventing falls

2:30-2:45         Bathroom break, survey of “fall proneness” and explanation of follow-up we’ll be doing to see how this workshop helped

2:45-3:30         Cooking demo, nutrition fact sheets, recipes and conversation about how good nutrition can help prevent falls
