Ministry: Serving the congregation with our gifts.

Prayer Shawl Ministry

Our Prayer Shawl Ministry exists to make and distribute Prayer Shawls to those we know and to those we have never met who are going through hard times, grief, illness, battles with cancer and more. Founded at CHUM by member Carol Walker, the Prayer Shawl ministry has grown to include many different people. In fact, it has spread beyond our walls. We've received shawls made for us to distribute from as far away as Florida! Shawls can be knitted or crocheted. If you are a Louisville/Southern Indiana resident who doesn't know how to knit, but you'd like to learn, several of the team members are willing to help you learn. We take donations of yarn (several skeins of the same color are always useful, preferably in something washable.

The basic idea is simple: the person making the prayer shawl prays for the recipient throughout the making of the shawl. When someone receives a prayer shawl, they not only receive a comforting physical reminder that someone cares for them, but the spiritual blessing of prayers that have been poured out: "With every stitch, I said a prayer for you!"

Meeting Times

From time to time, the Prayer Shawl Team gathers at CHUM to knit for an hour together. Please visit our calendar for the next meeting. If you have questions about this ministry, please e-mail us.

Please, get involved!

We need: people who like to knit or crochet and donations of yarn. We've distributed dozens of shawls, at this point around Louisville and around the world! You don't have to be a Louisville resident to get involved: you can make a shawl and send it to us. We will bless it at the altar and the Lord will make sure that it ends up wrapped around someone who really needs the blessing.

bulletB. received a shawl after a serious brain infection. The first words she was able to read were the words on the small card attached to her prayer shawl.
bulletBaby S. in California received a shawl as she and her family were trying to figure out why she was having seizures.
bulletG.--a school teacher in Louisville who is fighting cancer--received a shawl made by someone in Jacksonville, FL (who was previously unknown to our church, but had heard about our project "through the grapevine."
bulletR.--in Australia--endured a double amputation of his legs and received a shawl made by someone who'd never met him, but cared.
bulletL., a blind woman who's returning to faith, received a shawl at a crucial point in her journey, when she felt alone and scared.

The stories go on and on. Won't you be a part of this terrific ministry? Complete shawls can be mailed to us: CHUM Church, Prayer Shawls, 201 S Peterson Ave, Louisville KY 40206. We are happy to help with postage if you are economically disadvantaged but want to be part of this ministry.

Stitching Us Closer As God's People

Sometimes, our knitters get involved in other projects. One of our "associate knitters" in Florida, Laura, recently shared this with us:

"Dear CHUM Knitters: I was going to a knitting group and they were making chemo hats. I thought here in Florida they would be too hot. This groups also works with the homeless shelter, and as I looked into it I found that the social worker was the daughter of a former co-worker at CSX. She told me that at any given time there are about 65 children there. From a few weeks to 17 years old. You may not believe this, but sometimes in the winter it does get cold here. We are surrounded by water, and when the wind blows it is cold. The children at the shelter have to walk 3 1/2 blocks to catch the school bus. Last winter the shelter was always looking for scarves, hats and gloves. I felt at this time they could use my help. To hear about a homeless child is bad enough, but to have one that is cold was too much. Here are a few of the knitted hats I have been making for the homeless shelter here in Jacksonville."

Thank you, Laura, for sharing this story, as well as pictures of the hats you knitted with such love and care.
